We spotted it today while watering where needed in the garden. I saw it out front first, then he spied it on our crab apple tree just when we were getting ready to go back inside and have supper.
I am cursing that we still can’t afford more disks for the better camera. It was lovely. These butterflies have two very different forms, the White Admiral and the Red Spotted Purple. Yet both are Limenitis arthemis. This picture was copied from the Massachusetts Butterfly Club site, and was the one that closest resembled the one we saw.
I may be wrong, but it was circling about on a leaf as we watched it high above our heads. I remarked that I thought it was laying eggs. That might be wishful thinking, but it certainly seems that way to me from footage I’ve seen of butterflies laying eggs in general. Perhaps we’ll find out later this summer when hatching time rolls around.
