Did I mention our red raspberry canes had fruit? If not, I just did. We were a bit neglectful in cane management last year, and we have way too many runners, and thus not much fruit this year. Continue reading “Our berries of 2018”

Updated the Plant Progress yesterday
I updated the 2018 Plantings page.
We’ve had another casualty, but some success as well (one noted by image yesterday). We also ate our first blueberries and raspberries of the season (red and black). It was still a bit soon for the blueberries we taste tested. The strawberries keep getting raided by the critters before we get a chance. To be fair, we have a lot more raspberry canes than we do fruiting strawberry plants so far.
Follow up of attending my first Conservation Commission meeting.
As I noted before, I did finally attend a local Conservation Commission meeting, and in doing so found myself volunteering to help share some plants with a homeowner that inadvertently removed plants he didn’t know he shouldn’t because part of his land was in a protected flood zone. Not a “you’ll flood every year” sort of flood zone, but what’s known here as a Q3 “100 year flood” zone. You’d think there’d be some law stating sellers of homes should make sure buyers know about that sort of thing…I guess it’s more expected that folks will inform themselves about such. I remember after I heard about one legendary Gardner flood, and soon found myself well acquainted with the OLIVER map which helped us strike a few homes off our house search possibles. Thoughts on sharing and friendships
The Will Rogers quote I also posted today is one near and dear to my heart. A friend of mine I play LOTRO with says that quote all the time. I share his belief in what it means, and have made many friends over the years where the initial contact between us was a meeting of strangers.
I also believe in the notion of sharing one’s abundance. We were very lucky here in that so many plants were already here, many are well established to boot. When you move to a new place, and really don’t know anyone, sometimes sharing is a way to meet someone that might turn out to be a life long friend. Speaking of strawberries…surprise!
I had noticed yesterday when looking at the patch along the fence that a leaf seemed to be crumpled a bit. I thought it was simply caught while growing under the next nearest leaf and grew oddly, so I bent down to nudge it open, and then felt uneducated. Inside was a larvae. I hadn’t even considered something would be inside. Continue reading “Speaking of strawberries…surprise!”
strawberries everywhere followup part 2
Today, as I am yanking up my latest nemesis–purple loosestrife–I see a tiny blob of red. “Huh,” I think to myself, “That’s new.”
Strawberries. Three tiny ones on a plant buried in the front yard sloped portion’s masses of wildflowers and grasses. Then I find another plant close by, also with red budding berries. Continue reading “strawberries everywhere followup part 2”

Update on growing bits and seeds — second week of June ’18
Bought two plant seeds this week, black eyed susans and bachelor buttons. I did manage to get them in a planter for the time being. I’m still wary of the squirrels, though the susan seeds are so tiny they can’t possibly want to steal those, right? I’m going to try stagger sowing them a bit, though not by much because the start is already pretty darn late this year. (Hullo, June!) So I only did some of each to start.
